Lake Hawaea

Road trip New Zealand.

My freind's Daniel and Jenn invited me on a backpacking trip in the Southern Alps. They are a lovely couple and some of my best friends in Dunedin since I've arrived. It just feels good around them. Great energy.

The morning was ominous. Freezing cold, cloudy skies. But as we meandered away from the coast inland along the backroads of Aotearoa the skies cleared, the clouds softened.

And by the time we made it to Wanaka and Hawaea it was downright lovely. The day pregnant with calm. We camped here for the night off the road on Lake Hawaea. A huge glacier lake in the shadow of the mountains. We cooked on the camp stove, drank wine, and basked in the novelty, and elation of being away. Of the adventure ahead...
