After a pretty poor night's sleep, a session on the hotel gym cross trainer was quite energising and saw me through the rest of the day. There was also time for a quick wander around the city (which bears considerable similarities to other Finnish cities, except that where Tampere was (is) "red", this one was "white"), but my, oh my, it is cold. It was snowing in the afternoon, and then when we walked to dinner at the other end of the city centre it was incredibly slippery underfoot (and windy to boot). I didn't bring quite the right clothing for this... The Finns have a word for the winter that comes back and catches you out, amongst the spring days. By the end of the week, it will be sunny and 10 degrees...
Interesting day working with PhD students based throughout Finland, many of them international students. Lots of inspiring and fascinating projects, and good to help them with their methodologies and honing their research questions.
