SLR or Compact? Its amazing how often the device that's in your pocket is the best one to use.

We had finished one batch of site work today and had a good tramp (almost two miles) back towards the car. This scene, if not under my nose, appeared just slightly off my beaten track on the march back. The low winter sun had just come over the edge of the Monadhliath Mountains to the south and cast this contrasty orange glow around the old cottage. It wanted a low ISO, a small aperture and a tripod and an SLR. Running to the car for both bits of hardware was out of the question as the scene would last for only a few seconds. I dismantled the RTK survey pole I had over my shoulder, forced it into the frosty ground and used it as a make shift tripod for the wee Sigma. It punches above its weight for just 4.5 mp and given it was this or nothing I am happy to have just got the snap.

There has been frost and fog at both ends of the day but the short period of day light in between has been lovely up here at Croachy. Communication for work has been better and much of yesterday's ambiguity and confusion has been resolved. We got a lot done so I'm not nearly as angry as I thought I was going to be. The last phrase was borrowed from one of my old bosses which was close as he would ever come to admitting to some satisfaction from the efforts of his subordinates.

Maybe I will be less angry again tomorrow.
