But did you know a duck's feathers aren't naturally waterproof? Ducks have a preen gland, just at the bottom of their back, just before their tail (our chickens have s similar gland, though not as waterproofing a secretion). The secretion from this gland is gathered on the bill, then very carefully passed over their feathers. This not only means they don't get waterlogged, and therefore cold, but also helps with buoyancy (which is one of the reasons diving ducks like the Tufted Ducks, and the female Goldeneye seen today, 'pop' back up out of the water after diving, and why you'll see ducks preening so much).
