Bowerhill (Monday 1st April 2019)

I found a couple more juvenile swans when I popped down to the canal at the Seend Park swing footbridge. There was a dog on the bridge being persuaded away from bothering them when I arrived, but they didn't seem too distressed and came up to me in the hope of some tidbits, and glided off past the moored narrowboat when it turned out I hadn't any.

I also stopped off at Caen Hill to check on the swans and had a good chat with a young woman CRT volunteer. She confirmed that Mrs Swan was sitting on eggs (see Extra with her second eyelid) but didn't know how many. Last year they had their cygnets towards the end of May, if I remember correctly.

A heron landed at the edge of the side pound behind Lock 41 quite near to the nesting swan (Mr Swan was at the next lock down) and I saw it swoop and swallow a fish (theoretically in the image I took but you'll have to take my word for it).

Marvin Gaye (2 April 1939, Washington, DC - 1 April 1984, Los Angeles CA).
Although best known in versions by the sixties beat groups that covered it, such as the Who and the Poets, and later by The Band, the original version of this Holland-Dozier-Holland song was by Marvin Gaye, who was born on 2nd April 1939, but was shot dead by his father on this day in 1984, the day before his 45th birthday (he would have been 80 tomorrow). Marvin Gaye recorded this over a backing track, originally recorded for the Supremes, for his album How Sweet It Is To Be Loved By You in 1965, though it was first released as a single in America in September 1964.
