Crazy About Birds

White-throated Sparrow

The enormous flock of white-throated sparrows that calls my garden its winter home will be heading north to their breeding grounds soon. Typically they're still here - some of them, anyway - at the end of April when I head to West Virginia for the annual New River Birding & Nature Festival, and by the time I get back a few days into May, they're all gone.

Meanwhile, the other bird that winters here in large numbers, the dark-eyed junco, seems already to have moved north. At least, I'm not aware of having seen one in several days.

This particular bird seemed to be eating the blossoms on the quince. See extra. There were some cardinals also indulging in a bit of pink salad.
