Davaar Lighthouse

After lunch Fergus and I went for a walk out to the old shipyard and wandered out the shore path to Slaty Farlan and out to the second gate. Lovely out there again. It felt warmer than 11.7C

Davaar Lighthouse
Located at the northeast tip of Davaar Island at the mouth of Campbeltown Loch, Davaar Lighthouse comprises a white tower 20m (65 feet) in height, giving the light an elevation of 37m (121 feet) above sea level. It was the work of David & Thomas Stevenson in 1854. Adjacent is a row of white-washed light keepers' cottages and the total cost of the construction between £3,000 and £4,000.

The light used a mercury vapour lamp in conjunction with catoptric mirrors driven by clockwork machinery, giving an intensity of 300,000 candela (or candlepower) and a range of 23 miles (37 km). There was also an electric fog siren.

The lighthouse was automated in 1983 and the keepers' cottages now provide self-catering accommodation.
