A day to ourselves

After the exciting 100th. Birthday party yesterday we were due for another day in Peebles to do our own things. The weather had improved. All the snow had gone and there was a blue sky but with a very chilly wind.

I went out for a walk before breakfast and was rewarded with this female Goosander on the River Tweed.
An extra shows how several days of rain had turned the normally peaceful Tweed into a rapidly flowing torrent.

What to do with the day? We have visited many places round Peebles before and some others were not yet open. So we decided to go a little further and explore Berwick on Tweed, a town we had never visited.
This is at the point where the Tweed flows into the North Sea. For hundreds of years before the Act of Union it had been fought over by the Scots and the English.
It turned out to be most interesting and enjoyable with excellent marked paths along the river and round the historical areas.
It also has three bridges across the Tweed. My second extra shows an Edinburgh bound express crossing the famous rail bridge which was opened by Queen Victoria in 1850.
Those Victorian Engineers were quite remarkable in their achievements.
