Thiepval Memorial.
Today we decided to head for the Thiepval Memorial to look for another of Mr W’s relatives.
This young man, an only child, was to die on the 7th October 1916 at only 20 years of age at Gueudecourt on the Somme as a Second Lieutenant fighting with the Queen’s Own Royal West Kent Regiment 6th Battalion . No remains were to be found other than his sword by which they were to identify his location at his time of death. The sword still remains in the family. As a result of this his name is remembered on The Thiepval Memorial along with the many other brave men whose remains were never found or identified. The Thiepval museum was excellent really giving a sense of this horrific war.
After our visit we then headed for lunch and back to our hotel for our last night in Arras.
