Silloth Docks

We thought there might be spectacular waves in Silloth, with the high winds but, although turbulent and great to watch, my pictures were not that impressive.

Meanwhile Gordon had spied a ship in the dock and we went round to investigate. I decided this was more interesting and stepped inside the high fences to take a picture. We watched the ship's cargo being unloaded into trucks and thought it was sand, but of course that would have been a bit silly. We looked the ship up and found it had come from Spain and then we found it was actually wheat that was being brought in and headed for Carrs Mill on the other side of the dock.

This intrigued Gordon, as he remembered as a lad watching wheat being taken from ships directly into the Mill via a funnel. Now it would seem they decant it into trucks, which then drive round to the Mill, where the wheat is sucked out and fed into a giant hopper. We did wonder why it was done this way, but there must be a reason.

It was all a lot different down by the dock when Gordon was a boy - no fences then and kids could just wander around, never mind the ships coming and going. He always told his daughters that he used to swim in the dock. Of course they did not believe him, but actually in this case I think he was telling the truth.
