A Winter Picnic
It was another cold day today - way below zero this morning. But there was no wind and it was sunny so we decided it was the best day for a picnic. We packed up food and off we went to another part of the nature reserve. This is the big bird lake and we’ve had picnics here on all three of my previous visits, both winter and summer. I love this outing!
Last March when we were here the lake was still completely frozen and in fact we saw people skating on it. Today the level of the lake was really high and any remaining ice was thin and mostly along the edges. It’s been a warmer than average winter in Sweden.
We walk a little ways through the forest and then along the narrow footbridge to our favourite picnic spot. Thankfully no one else had claimed it and we could relax and enjoy our soup, bread, jam, cheese, coffee and biscuits. Once the meal was over we enjoyed the warmth of the sun on our faces while leaning back on the big rock. Alice mostly studied the swan and 2 geese that were nearby. We stayed over 2 hours including the short walk back and forth to the car. Not bad for a cold winter’s day!
Once back at home we caught up on some skiing that had taken place earlier in the day - cross-country sprint races from Drammen in Norway. Some of our favourite skiers were in the finals - both Swedish and American, but none of them made the podium today.
This evening Elisabet treated me to an Italian meal in the city - a belated birthday meal. We each had pizza and they were both super delicious. Of course we brought a doggy-bag back for Alice. It would have been CRIMINAL not to! She LOVES pizza!
