Grimspound

In a small valley below Hameldon Tor you will find Grimspound.
It covers an area of 4 acres and is at a height of 1477ft (450m), The first recorded use of this name was in 1797 when people tried to associate the name with the Vikings and called it Grims Pound. The word pound is just a local word to mean an area enclosed with a wall. Now a days it is attributed to the Bronze Age (4000 years BC)

At 22.50 on the 21st March 1941 a Hampden bomber from 49 Sqd, 5 Group Bomber Command from RAF Scampton, returning from an operation over France, crashed onto the top of Hameldon (529m) in bad visibility and the crew of 4 were killed. There is a memorial nearby in their memory.

This afternoon it was cold up here and there obviously has been a light falling of snow. It will all be gone tomorrow as we have rain forecast for this evening and tomorrow, so wet day for my birthday!
