Chelsea girl

Sian texted me this morning and suggested going to see the McCullin at The Britain. We reminisced about our time in newspapers and when we first saw his work. We were both around 10 or 11 and saw his pictures in The Sunday Times.

Most famed for his work in Vietnam, Don was commissioned to photograph war zones and places of human suffering from Biafra to the Lebanon.

They are even more powerful now as newspapers can't afford to send photojournalists out for very long. They are also reticent to publish work that is too alarming.

Don McCullin's work opened our eyes to current affairs and the news.

When I was in my teens and too old for youth club, I went to a church discussion group. We were supposed to talk about The Bible, but instead talked about the latest news story.

Fifteen years later I was working for The Times.
