Fun and games
A good day in Tampere. First thing, we got up to an icy window (see first extra). Last night the temperature rose and by the time we went to bed it was raining. Obviously it got cold again during the night. The result - not pleasant - was that when we went out just after 10am the streets were literally icerinks. We slithered over to Cafe Puusti on Yliopistonkatu, where the korvapuusti are home baked (see second extra). A further slithering took us into the centre of the city, mercifully via one of the tunnels under the railway which was obviously ice free. We had a bit of shopping to do, and then we met RB at Plevna for lunch (and beers - it would have been rude not to, the place is a micro brewery). We spent the afternoon in Werstas, the museum of Finnish labour. Amongst other things, we saw the very big steam engines (see blip) and learnt a lot of details about working class life in Finland and a fair bit about the social history around the civil war and its aftermath. Afterwards, we went for coffee and another cake, and bought a book called Red Tampere. Cool. Finally, we ventured outside to discover the temperature was up to around 6 degrees, and so the pavements were basically safe for walking. Home via Alko. It is Saturday, after all.
