New door at Milford Haven!!
It was a promising start early on when the men arrived to fit our two new doors at 7.15 am! A bright morning, but then the skies clouded over and we had one or two showers.
I've used the front door as my blip photo, as it has the Lakeland stone plaque included on the right-hand side with the name "Milford Haven".
The gaffer greeted me with a cheery,
" Are you ex-pats then?" having read the sign.
He thought we were originally from Wales, where Milford Haven is situated, and was rather non-plussed when I said "No, we are ex Lancastrians".
I decided to tell him the history of how it came to be in our possession and the reason for the name.
My father's middle name was Milford, but he had no idea why, when I asked him years ago.
We named our first son, Matthew, with Milford as his middle name. His friends at University in the mid 1990's nicknamed him Lord Milford!
My dad had always maintained that his maternal grandfather, named John Opie, had originated from the Lizard Peninsula, in Cornwall. Eventually I began to research his origins.
I discovered that he had indeed been born there and had been a tin miner living near Wendron.
He married a young lady from Constantine called Alice Milford. It is near Gweek, which where the Cornish Seal Sanctuary is situated.
So that was the reason for dad's middle name. It came from his maternal grandmother.
Why do we have the name plaque? Dad had one made after he find out where his name originated. And fixed it by his front door.
When Matthew was killed in the accident in 2006, dad unscrewed the name plate, and gave it to Heidi, Matt's young 28 year old widow.
He told us and her, that Matt had asked him if he could have it in the fulness of time. (Obviously as a legacy). Dad was touched and told him it would indeed be his one day.
Sadly it was not to be in Matt's lifetime.
When several years later, Heidi moved house, and started a new job up in Manchester, she brought us the name plaque to fix by the front door, where it has been ever since.
She has now been married again for 8 years, to another Matthew, (good name!), an American, and they live in Austin, Texas. He has become part of our family.
The extras are of Matt, taken a few weeks before he died, my dad, in Cornwall on holiday with us, and my Great Granddad John Opie, also Alice Milford as a young lady.
So many memories are contained in that one sign....
