It's the Great Backyard Bird Count weekend, something we've done for years. Cornell Lab of Ornithology, National Audubon Society and Bird Studies Canada are the organizers of it. The idea is to count, and then report, all the birds that you see and are able to identify at a given location within a certain time period, to help them track bird migration. John and I mainly count the ones on the yard and field. Then take a drive to the dike or wetlands to score some waterfowl and raptors. It's a fun challenge, and having a camera helps. When there are flocks with large numbers, and they are all moving, having a photo to count from makes the impossible task doable.
This Golden - crowned Sparrow is a daily visitor to the yard with his mates.
