Unusually for a city there were two castles in York. Both were motte and bailey styles but all that remains of Baile Hill castle is the mound with some trees on top whereas the keep of Clifford's Tower has survived as part of York Castle which used to be extensive. The castle was built by William the Conqueror out of wood in 1086 but after being burnt and then blown down it was replaced with a stone castle in 1472. (The same date as yesterday’s very ornate Minster was completed)  Amongst other activities it was the scene of a huge massacre of Jews in 1190, a mint and a prison. Today there are extensive views across York from the walkway on top of the walls.
