Most tourists to York like to visit the Jorvik Viking Centre and as it’s a few years since we went there it was one of today’s places to see.  During extensive excavations in the area over 40,000 objects were found dating from around 900 AD when there was a very large Viking settlement.  The oxygen deprived wet clay had preserved all kind of things including leather, textiles, plant and animal remains and parts of fences, ditches and buildings so it was relatively easy to reconstruct a settlement.
A “time capsule” travels around different dioramas with various activities represented with the sights and sounds which would have been the norm then.  Life-like animated people speaking Old Norse and animals and birds move and utter sounds so we felt we were really back there in time, especially with the authentic smells too.  This scene appears to be of a couple selling meat and fish.
