Beach Birds
This is one of three Weka who would patrol our camp site looking for whatever was edible. The forester had a box of beer under a wet sack to keep it cool. They managed to pick the damp cardboard box apart to see what was inside. They can't fly but they can jump so everything had to be above their jumping height. They had no fear and would come right up to you when you had food in your hand. Extras are a Spoonbill which is the first I have seen. It was just marching up and down and at one point sat down and had a wee nap. At the estuary end of the beach were this group of gulls who had a White-fronted tern family in their midst.
This morning the forester and his brother had a most successful fishing trip. They caught Trevally and Snapper. The fish were big and so there was a lot of catching and releasing happening. After filleting the fish he went around our camping neighbour's and gave away fish. Everyone was most appreciative. One traveller from Switzerland said she is a vegetarian but when in New Zealand eats fish because it is so fresh. You can't get fresher than caught that morning.
