Goldfinch Total War

I had a lot of work to do today and didn't have time to get out for a walk. Fortunately there were plenty of birds visiting the feeders in the garden so I was confident I would get a blip if I set the camera up on a tripod by the kitchen window.

During the afternoon I heard a loud commotion of chattering birds. I went to the window and saw eight goldfinches all trying to feed at once from the sunflower seed feeder which only has two perches. It was carnage out there. I have never seen goldfinches showing so much aggression. They were wasting so much energy fighting, yet there was plenty for them all if only they had the patience to take it in turns.
