Louvre and More
Two excellent exhibitions today. First was a large show at the Louvre of chiaroscuro woodcuts (prints made with several blocks in different colors), from 1510 to 1650. Very technical, but I found it fascinating. (Coincidentally, the National Gallery in Washington is having a similar exhibition, through January 20.) Second was Caravaggio (his early period in Rome) at the Jacquemart-André--a small show, as always at that venue, but very high quality. It was curated by the lady in the extra*, Francesca Capelletti. In the early 1990's she was involved in the discovery of the National Gallery of Ireland's Caravaggio, the Taking of Christ, and she is now a professor in Ferrara, Italy. Her role is fully described in The Lost Painting by Jonathan Harr-- a wonderful book!
*Seeing Francesca in the gallery's video was a bit like meeting an old friend, having read Harr's book :)
