Common Enchantments

Sid’s Falls

A cold day for hiking to waterfalls with the temps never getting out of the 30s plus a little misty rain and a couple minutes of sleet.

Our first waterfall was Brasstown Creek Falls, a 40 foot drop,  which we got to by crossing the creek on a log!  Thank goodness for a long tree limb pole to steady myself.  Of course we had to cross back over to go to the other Falls a short distance away.    The first extra is one of  Brasstown Creek Falls.  The next falls were actually still Brasstown Creek...the Lower Brasstown, Brasstown Cascades, Brasstown Veil, and Brasstown Sluice.   And let me tell you, even though we walked right beside these falls all down the trail, it was not easy.   A very steep hill with little foot room, deep step downs (like sitting down and sliding off for my short legs) and having to use tree roots to hold on to the side of the hill where the trail was.   At this point, it began to sleet a little.  A couple of ladies decided to head back to the car and wait for us.    So we get down to the almost bottom of the trail and there is this little creek coming from the right to the big creek.   You had step on a big slanted rock and then step down to the dirt..this girl was almost there when her foot slipped and I fell sideways into the little creek...just on my hip and my shoes but wet for sure.  I saved the camera!  Yeah me!   Our guide, Mountain Man Dan, said I was sure tough and not fluff!!      I walked to the bottom of the falls where there was a sandy beach to get some photos..wet feet and cold butt.   Of course, by this time I was generating so much body heat that it actually did not feel bad.    Then we had to scramble back up the hill..I put the camera in the backpack..not taking any chances of it slinging against a rock while it was hanging from my neck!    Really hot and had to come out of some layers when we completely that 30 minute uphill!    The second extra is part of this falls known as the veil.   It was gorgeous and so worth the adventure!

So we left here and drove about 10 minutes to another area where we parked and walked down an old logging road to go to Sid's Falls which is where the main photo was taken of me.   The road ended and we walked through some woods and started downhill again.  It was not too bad except the trail got narrower and narrower and steeper and steeper.  Another little bit of time hanging on the roots and sliding down to the bottom.   There was hardly any area that was not part of the falls except for a short little rocky ledge where I am standing.    It was really beautiful area and Dan told us that this falls is hardly known which makes sense that the trail would be so grown up.    So back up the hill we went.   After walking the mile back to the car we were all ready to say goodbye and head home.

It was a good day of hiking with great people!  We had two ladies who hiked with us for the first time today...they may never come back!!!
