Long Man of Wilmington
This morning I went to have my nails done, and then I had a lunch date with Jan at the Ram Inn in Firle. Alan and Mark were originally coming with us but Alan's felt a bit off colour today, so rather than postpone, Mark suggested that just the two of us meet up. I'm glad we did as it's been planned for a while and I haven't seen Jan for ages so it was nice to catch up on each others news.
Before I headed home, I drove a few miles up the road to Wilmington to see the Long Man, otherwise known as the Wilmington Giant as he's 235 feet high. No-one really knows how long he's been there, some people think he's pre-historic and others believe he's the work of an artistic monk between the 11th and 15th centuries. Until the 19th century he was only visible in certain light conditions and after a light snowfall, but in 1874 he was marked out with yellow bricks. Then during World War II he was painted green so that he couldn't be used as a landmark, and in 1969 these bricks were replaced with pre-cast concrete blocks which are now regularly painted.
So nobody really knows why he's there or how long he's been there but there's a quote from the Rev A A Evans who said ' the Giant keeps his secret and from his hillside flings out a perpetual challenge'.
Home now and Alan's not 100% but he's feeling better than he did this morning, so we're going to have a nice relaxing night, and I'm looking forward to The Voice.
Hope you're having a good weekend!
