Epiphany
Went straight from the Eucharist today to the village of Luz to see their Nativity decorations that I'd read about in O Mouranense. The local sewing club had made ornaments for all the dozen or so trees in the main square, extra, plus a huge crocheted tree made by one woman, D. Josefa.
And then, they are gradually building up a typical Portuguese Nativity scene under an olive tree (transplanted from the now submerged old village), hung with fabric stars; this year they added some party-goers to the different village scenes, as well as the normal Nativity, set in a grassy shelter. What really amused us was the traditional pig killing, complete with bloodied knife, in extra. Ummm, Jesus was Jewish...
We then walked the boardwalk out onto the Lake and sat in the sunshine, eating a locally made result of one of those killings, along with equally local bread, cheese, tomatoes and red wine.
