Lions and Elephants
Early start to the day saw us leave unbreakfasted to ascend the lion’s rock in Sigiriya. A 200 metre rock formation that juts out of the plain in central Sri Lanka. As a defensive location, great. As a place to build a palace atop, not so good. The sides are sheer, no water supply and every brick, stick of wood and piece of food had to be man handled up said sheer sides. The fortress palace was only occupied for 16 tears before everyone gave up on the idea.
We didn’t give upon it though and made it to the top before the hordes descended. Thank the lord we forwent our morning repast and could satisfyingly tuck into them on our return at 9:10.
Afternoon was spend a a nearby National Park for an elephant safari. As you can see Betty and I saw quite a large number of them. Most were closer than in this picture. Incredible. Sometimes though there did feel like there were too many jeeps following these lovely animals. The elephants didn’t seem to mind too much and are, I’m sure, grateful for not being hunted by the white man.
Only way to end the day was with a couple of local Lion beers.
Perfect.
