Higgledy Piggledy

Higgledy piggledy, falling and leaning, tipping and slipping, lichen covered, these gravestones were catching the morning sun outside Deerhurst Church this morning.

Underneath the tall pine trees outside the west door they all line up and have been there for decades. One of the readable ones was dated 1697, of a little boy William, who died aged 5 and it made me think how long ago that was. Born in 1692 - the date of the Salem Witch Trials; however these few here have been around longer than that.

The church itself dates back to Saxon times roundabout 800AD and is THE most complete example of a an Anglo/Saxon church with sculptures inside and out with the Deerhurst Angel being possibly the most famous. It was beautiful just to wander in the graveyard.

The bell tolled while I mooched with the camera - hope it wasn't tolling for me! However when I checked the time, the clock was wrong! :)
