Diary of an Edinburgher

By LadyMarchmont

Just the day for an ice cream!

Bike. I had an uninterrupted session because I waited till Archie had gone out with Jordan. It's definitely a bit more boring, though.

What a chilly chilly day! Bright sunshine, no wind, hint of snow in the air - perfect winter's day. Jordan brought us some of his apple chutney (a good swap for the tons of apples going to waste on our trees). He saw lots of birds today, including a woodpecker and a sparrow hawk. But no waxwings...

In the afternoon JR went into town to finalise Christmas shopping, and it was such a sunny day, I decided to go out as well, as I know there's a LOT of weather coming tomorrow. Archie's coat was put on. Though he hates it, he gets lots of admiring looks and comments.

I wanted to catch the last of the sun on the Victoria Street, but I was too late for that, so aimed for the castle, almost too late for that too. But the outing was a success, because all along, I’d intended calling in to Mary's Milk Bar. Yes, an ice cream parlour on the coldest day so far. I think it got up to 3°!

The milk bar was mobbed, but we squashed in and got a seat. I could see that the queue wasn’t getting smaller, as more people came to replace any who left, so I asked a lady to hold Archie's lead while I joined the queue. I had a double 'milk'. Not my favourite 'vanilla' but extremely nice. No, I didn’t try any of the fanciful and frankly ridiculous 'Christmas' flavours.

We walked up the 'Jean Brodie' steps, and back home over the Meadows. We were both puggled. Found a little box of home made dog biscuits on the step, from Rufus's mum. They look good enough (for me) to eat...
