It has been an interesting day in my wee world.
The start was good - the Advocate General’s opinion on a court case by 6 Scottish politicians (MPs, MSPs and MEPs from the Scottish Greens, the SNP and Labour) about whether the UK can unilaterally withdraw the article 50 notice given to the EU, and thus stop Brexit.
The 2 Labour MEPs will be out of a job (and into their sumptuous pensions) in March, so it is not an action their party supported.
The case started in the Scottish courts and was referred to the European Court of Justice. The UK Government has fought it tooth and nail (at huge public expense) because it doesn’t want people to know the answer.
The AG’s opinion is that the UK can withdraw unilaterally. The Court does not aways follow the AG’s opinion, but does so in about 80% of cases.
The end of the day was good too. May’s government was found to be in contempt of Parliament by a majority (18) of MPs. It is the first government ever to achieve that notoriety.
The issue is whether MPs get to see the UK Government’s legal advice on the deal she has struck with the EU. Again, it does not want people to know - not even their elected MPs.
Anyway, the Maybot continues to lurch from meaningless soundbite to meaningless soundbite.
My desk was covered in more mundane matters. Unhappy Council tenants. Unhappy ScotRail passengers. Unhappy NHS patients.
I did get to write a letter to the First Minister - my first. Most of the other ministers/cabinet secretaries (and one UK Government minister) have already received wee parcels of wit and wisdom from me, so her turn had to come.
The Blip?
In support of a few of my fellow EU citizens who have been so cruelly treated by the Maybot, I bought most of my evening meal (Brotzeit rather than dinner) at the Polish deli close to the office. A bit of Scottish cheese and Welsh butter was added to their ham, bread and crisps. Simple, and all delicious.
Apologies about the food miles - not my usual style.
