Fishbone Fern
Weeding is to be my official task whilst at the DRO. In particular the 'control' of a variety of native and non native plants. That is, pulling them up in the most environmentally friendly way - by hand. Control - I don't think so!
Fish bone fern is quite a pretty plant, and native to Australia, but going by the principle that a weed is a plant in the wrong place, this is the number one enemy of the rainforest edge. It seems to be the ‘bracken’ of the area and spreads ultra-quickly either by spore or long rhizomes. New rhizomes gallop along underground shooting up fronds every foot or so like firework bursts and older growth forms a thick mat under the soil surface suppressing other plants. My time here as a volunteer looks to be spent pulling them up but of course any tiny length of rhizome left will merrily sprout up as soon as the rains start.
