Ant Tree Symbiosis?

Here’s an interesting tree that is found deep in the jungle behind the Observatory. It is covered in slits all over its trunk that look as if they have been slashed by a determined vandal with a very sharp penknife. However, it grows itself this way to attract the ants into it. Why this should be and what advantage each gets from the other I have no idea!
