Tudeley
When Sir Henry d'Avigdor-Goldsmid's 21 year old daughter, Sarah, died in a sailing accident in 1963 he commissioned Marc Chagall to design a window at the local church as a memorial. If you look at this image in large you will see Sarah dead in the sea and her mother, left and above, mourning her. Above, a red horse carries her to a ladder which leads up to Christ surrounded by angels. Chagall uses red to symbolise hope and joy in his work and it reoccurs as a motif.
When he visited the church in 1967 for the installation of the window, his first time on site, Chagall was so taken with it that he said that he would do a further 11 windows and All Saints' became the only church in the world to have all its windows decorated by Chagall. He worked on them over the next 15 years and the last ones were installed in 1985.
To my shame it's the first time I've visited this place but I'll certainly go again - the windows are beautiful and worth spending time with.
