There is a large display of poppies in Aberlady Memorial Garden with a poignant frieze designed by a local artist with contributions from the local primary school.  It is a pity that the strong wind has torn some of the frieze but the painting must have helped the children to realise how different it was in their area when so many went to war.

It symbolises East Lothian during WW1 when it was at the forefront of the defence of Scotland.  An airship and different aeroplanes piloted by men, who were then lucky if they survived 11 days, take to the skies to look out for enemy U-boats.  In the foreground are shown a soldier, sailor, pilot and nurse and various people working on the land while in the distance can be seen soldiers and horses setting out for war, many never to return.
