lost boys

This evening I have been putting together a small display about the Dunscore War Memorial for an event on Sunday called “Remembering War, Working for Peace”.

This is a photo taken at the turn of the last century, when nobody in this family could have foreseen the horrors which lay ahead for them. The two boys on the right, nephews of my great grandfather, are Robert and James. Both were killed in 1917, Robert in Palestine and James at the battle of Arras. Both had been wounded previously , nursed back to health in London (though James lost an eye) and sent back to fight again.

John, on his mother’s lap, was wounded in 1918 but survived the war. He emigrated to Canada and lived to be 90 years old.
