Diary of an Edinburgher

Must try harder

The gym this morning was like an old folks' social centre! And the pool was full of mothers and babies. The oldies all know each other, most I’m on nodding acquaintance with. Hugh, the gym instructor on Fridays, is so good with them, but his special charge is Mary, our wee pal. He escorts her around, waits patiently while she chats with each pal, and sets her up on the equipment, and comes back to escort her to the next task, or stands and chats with her while she pedals. I discovered that they go off for a coffee and biscuits in the staffroom half way through the morning's session.

I was chatting to another old lady while she was on the knee bend thingie. When she'd moved on, I had a go with the same settings... but I couldn’t even get started! She'd had the weights on 60kg, and was chatting away all the while - way higher than I even attempt. Must try harder.

Archie and I had been sitting out in the sun this morning when Jordan arrived. What a lovely day it was. They went up the hill and through the Hermitage. I love how Jordan - a keen bird watcher - says, 'WE.saw a dipper. And WE heard a kestrel.' . Hmmm... I don’t think Archie did, Jordan.

We didn’t do much this afternoon. JR, uncharacteristically, felt like just relaxing at home instead of rushing off somewhere. And so we lit the fire and did just that - reading, watching afternoon TV and snoozing. Quite a bit of snoozing...
