Can't Stop The Feeling!
Another full day at the food bank today - and then I went to a new sign language choir. I think I need to add a 'do nothing day' to my diary!
Warren Barrow was born to profoundly deaf parents, but is hearing. His parents encouraged him to break down barriers between hearing and deaf communities and he has been campaigning to get British Sign Language onto the National Curriculum.
He has a number of academies across the country and tries to raise deaf awareness through teaching sign songs. There's always a lot of discussion about the use of SSE (Sign Supported English) as it doesn't follow the sentence structure/order as BSL (British Sign Language). I think if people learn how to sign a song, and are then inspired to take a Level 1 qualification, it can only be a good thing.
My friend, who is in the other sign language choir I attend, has just opened the Wayne Barrow Academy Manchester so I wanted to go along to give her a bit of moral support. She's the loveliest, bubbliest person you could hope to meet and is also qualified to Level 6 which is a real achievement. I came away knowing how to sign along to Justin Timberlake's Can't Stop The Feeling!
She posted on her Facebook page before tonight's session to say she saw Caroline Parker perform at her University 7 years ago and left feeling completely inspired. She called her mum to say she was going to learn sign language one day and look where the journey's taken her. This is a Tedx talk from Caroline Parker. I had never seen it before and thought it was amazing: Singing without my voice
Can you imagine being the reason someone takes a new direction in their life! Follow your dreams people, you don't know who you might inspire along the way!
Wayne came along to her first session tonight so I asked them both for a quick photo!
Quote for today:
Never give up on a dream just because of the time it will take to accomplish it.
The time will pass anyway.
