Put a cork in it

It's not so easy to put in back in once it had been removed. To tell someone to "put a cork in it" is therefore not an effective way to stop them talking/complaining. If they weren't born with a restraint on how much they talk or with a non-negative outlook on life, the cork may temporarily keep the contents from spilling out, but it will also allow air to get in to feed the frustration. Woe on those who are present when the cork is removed.

C cooked tomato chutney. I looked for a place to stay in Amsterdam for a long weekend  for my birthday in February. C had more success than I had.
