What am I?

This is my first weekend in foreign lands when I won't be going back to Blighty any time soon. It's a novel experience. It was a nice day so today we went into town and I took my SLR with me and took a few pictures.

I rather like this picture, what do you think it is. No points for saying wood, I think that bit is obvious, but what is it?
