Radda in Chianti
Today we drove through Castellina and along more windy roads to Radda another walled ancient hilltop town which used to be the capital of the region. We stopped for a coffee first after parking the car. The cafe had a really interesting loo - just as well N didn't want to use it with his dodgy knee! Through the storage room and immediately after opening the door there was a steep curved number of narrow steps up to the "throne" with notices not to wet the steps as they could become dangerous and to tell the staff in the event! The white and blue Delft-like wash basin was lodged in the corner half way up.
Radda was nearly empty as it had started to rain so we walked around the centre, visited the church, bought a Times newspaper and looked in the window of Knight Frank displaying expensive Tuscan houses for sale. We decided to return to Castellina for a snack lunch and to look for a fruit shop.
We have not seen one fresh fruit shop since we have been over here!
Back there we found a locals'cafe on the outskirts which was spacious, light and airy. A few men were chatting and reading the newspaper. We ordered a lasagne for N and I had a salad in a bowl that was at least 4
inches deep! A young family from Eastern Europe came in with their little children and settled down out of the rain. We exchanged a few words about their youngest, a couple of months younger than baby I. Outside again we noticed the Co-op sign on the door of a house but it was closed
from 12pm-4pm.
Extras: Olives, grapes and view from hotel.
