In Which a Caterpillar Gets His Wings!

We've been watching the monarch caterpillars on our milkweed. There's a chrysalis here and there. And on this day, one of our caterpillars turned into a butterfly and flew away! The dots on the rear wings indicate it is a male. Perfect in every way!

On this day, we also left for our first backpack trip of fall - yes, we car-camped last weekend, but backpacking is a thing in and of itself. We walked into the back-country in Quehanna, to the Valley of the Elk. It was sunny and lovely. You may see a photo of the late-afternoon view along the creek in the extras.
