The Rhone
The Rhone is a huge river, one that we usually come across as we travel north or south through France and usually as we negotiate our way round Lyon. Tonight we are staying on the Rhone, near Vienne and we had time this afternoon to go into the city. Unfortunately, as soon as we arrived it started to rain, the first rain we have had for three weeks. So, we found somewhere to have lunch and, by the time we came out, the rain had stopped and the sun came out. We still didn't feel like walking round the city, although there are many Roman sites to be discovered.
Before leaving we walked down to the river. We watched this extremely long river cruise ship as it went by. I did wonder how it ever managed to turn round. We were also watching a guy trying to get this car onto his breakdown trailer. The police were holding up the traffic whilst he did so. The car must have gone right through the metal fencing, complete with flowers trough and got itself entangled in the metal and that was what was making the task so difficult. How anyone managed to drive straight through a metal fence I have no idea. If the fence hadn't been there the car would probably have gone into the water.
On our way back over the river we stopped at the archaeological site of Saint-Romain-en-Gal, only to find that the whole place had been taken over by a festival, which seemed to be a mixture of wine tasting and displays of Roman life.
First extra - a demonstration of how the Romans made wine.
Second extra - a demonstration of Roman sculpting. The huge building in the background is the Gallo-Roman Museum, which we had intended going to, but decided against it and left them all to it.
