The Cup and Saucer.
These stones are certainly older than 1379 but not older than the Norman Conquest.
The top stone reputedly once had a cross on top, and a very old house near by, dating from 1622, is called Cross House.
It is thought that they may have been erected by Lord of the Manor, Sir Brian de Thornhill, in memory of his faithful servant Adam de Soureby, who was fatally iinjured near this spot, after being kicked by his master’s horse in 1347.
It is also thought the “ Cup and Saucer” resembles the Old Market Cross belonging to Bradford. This dates back to the time of Ilbert de Lacy when a Charter of 1251 was granted to him the right to hold a market in his manor of Bradford.
We do know that for many years the Cup and Saucer has been used by local people as a meeting point, and for worship.
You can see in the background the village pond.
They have now finished the dredging, and the huge digger has gone. Unfortunately so have the ducks, as there is now very little water in the bottom.
We will now have to wait and see when they return.
I think it will be next year before the edges are replanted.
Just need some rain to fill it! Today however, as it has been glorious again, but a lot colder.
Only 9C this morning. A bit warmer in the sun this afternoon.
We are out walking with the club again tomorrow. I think it is going to be dry, but cold.
May be a scarf and gloves day!
