Jewish Historical Museum
Still haven't seen a lot of Belgrade but did use my lunch break to visit the Jewish Historical Museum, which is just round the corner from my office. It is a chronological survey of Jewish artefacts in Yugoslavia but as you move from archaeological finds into nineteenth century photos of poets, writers, scientists and doctors it is hard not to start anticipating what you know is coming next. A chilling poster in German dated 16 April 1941 tells all Jews in Belgrade to report to officials by the morning of 19 April otherwise they will be shot. And of course that was just the beginning - the museum collection has some very graphic images of the horrors of those times. These photos of two young people seemed to capture the poignancy of the unfolding tragedy.
