Fountain, Cambridge Market Square.

This is all that remains of the fountain which supplied water from Hobson's conduit. When I was young there were tin cups attached to the taps but the water supply was disconnected when the Grand Arcade was built. So now it is a flowerbed. In the extra you can see an old drawing of the original fountain in the market square, but after a large fire in 1840, it was rebuilt in Gothic style and the buildings demolished. Over the years it became unstable and the pillars are in the old folk museum yard and part of the structure is near Hobson's conduit at the junction of Lensfield rd /Trumpington rd, which is also opposite Hobson's coaching yard. 'Hobson's choice' referred to the fact that he picked the horses in rotation so they got adequate rest between journeys..
