Life's Little Moments

She's a Lady

Well she's all you'd ever want
She's the kind they'd like to flaunt and take to dinner
Well she always knows her place
She's got style, she's got grace, She's a winner
She's a Lady. Whoa whoa whoa, She's a Lady
Talkin' about that little lady, and the lady is mine -  Paul Anka, Tom Jones, 1970

This is the first American Lady (Vanessa virginiensis) I've seen in my garden this year.  In fact, I don't know that I saw any last year either, although 2017 was a huge irruptive year for the related Painted Ladies throughout the northern US.  Anyway, this lovely fresh butterfly made a very short stop in my New England Asters before flitting off to parts unknown.  Happily I was in the garden with the D850 and a 300 lens which was the perfect combo for a couple of quick shots.

In looking at these song lyrics, it strikes me how sexist that song was!  I mean, really, a woman who "always knows her place"?  I'd like to think we've made some progress since 1970.  After all, we know know that a woman's "place" is wherever she wants it to be.

Lunch with a friend, who also happens to be our attorney, today.  As usual, it was great to catch up.

Hubs left this morning for Pittsburgh for a quick meeting.  Back tomorrow night if all goes well.

My last big monarch cat went on his walkabout this afternoon.  About 30 minutes later, as I was pottering around in the garden what do you think I found?  Another monarch cat, probably a 4th instar!  So I went through the internal debate and concluded that I should leave him in the garden and let nature take its course.  That lasted less than an hour.  He's now inside the garage, in a netted enclosure munching on fresh milkweed.  It's going to be late when he flies, so I really don't know if I'm doing a good thing or not, but I couldn't leave him out there knowing that temps are going to dip into the 40's a couple of nights this week.   Oy.

Thanks for the comments on my pesky goldfinch teenager.  The whole gang was out there again today, with the youngsters making a racket and the parents trying dutifully to ignore them.
