Bergen
This is the view over Bergen and the fjords from Mt. Floyen after arriving on the funicular railway . Luckily, the clouds and drizzle had cleared so we were treated to the full view over the fjords and the city .
The day began with a walking tour stopping at the fish market and exploring the Bryggen - the centre of the fish merchant warehouses for many centuries. Much has been destroyed by fire but fortunately today it is a World Heritage site as there were plans to pull it down recently!
We then toured the Hanseatic Museum which explained the history of the Bryggen and its link with the Hanseatic League . It has preserved an original cod trading centre - 100 year old dried cod anyone ? :))
After walking to a small lake on Mt. Floyen we descended via the funicular ; after a brief respite in the hotel room we headed towards the Kode Gallery which consists of four separate blocks - more Munch but I was taken with the life and paintings of Nikolai Astrup .
We finished the day with a meal at the fish market - a giant monkfish surprised us by moving its mouth ( they were pulling strings ) !
Norway is an amazing and varied country but it is beyond expensive - the cinnamon buns are delicious - a coffee, and a bun for two people could easily cost nearly the equivalent of £30 .
