Today's the day ………………………. to find a gem

If you are a geologist, the Isle of Mull is a pretty fantastic place to visit.

You'll just have to take it from me - if you are not remotely interested in the likes of Tertiary volcanics, Jurassic fossils or the Permo-triassic - that there are some superb examples here of all of the above that geologists regularly come to see.

Will and I had a very special reason for going to Carsaig Bay on the south side of the island today.  It was connected with the geology of the rocks there, but there was another aspect.  Next month, it will be our 45th wedding anniversary which you may know is the 'Sapphire'  one?  If you look carefully on the dark-coloured beach at Carsaig Bay, you can find sapphires there.

Now obviously they are not the sparkly, polished sapphires that you find in a jeweller's shop, but they are the real thing in its natural state.  And we were very pleased with what we found today ……………………...
