The Italian Chapel
We drove through Kirkwall to the eastern side of the mainland and then south to see the Churchill barriers. These were constructed after HMS Royal Oak was sunk by a German U-boat in Scapa Flow to prevent further attack of the British fleet via the eastern entrances. The causeways connected the islands of South Ronaldsay,Burray,Glimps Holm and Lambs Holm with the mainland and were built with help from Italian prisoners of war from the camp nearby
Two Nissen huts were joined to make a chapel and this was beautifully decorated inside using materials available . When the prisoners were moved to Yorkshire the governer promised to preserve the chapel.
This photo shows the interior which is beautifully decorated and the extras show the outside and two boards telling the history of the chapel
