Hybrid pied/black stilt
This stilt was nesting on the exposed shore of Lake Tekapo. The lake is a hydro lake, and is being kept low at present, because, I understand, repairs are needed to the canal. So the area in which the birds are nesting would often be part of the lake. The bird is a hybrid between the rare black stilt, which for many years has been protected and actively managed by the Department of Conservation, and the common pied stilt.
