Female mallard on Lake Alexandrina

We paddled our kayak on Lake Alexandrina, in amazingly calm conditions. There were a number of pairs of crested grebes, but they haven't started nesting yet. We watched a group of mallards feeding along the edge of the lake while we stopped for a snack. This female was looking very smart, unlike her scruffy male companion, and also, braver than him, came much closer to us than he did.
