While Aussies were busy getting their society organised and ordered with schools and churches in the 1860s, Americans ( with the help of a few slaves) were building fabulous mansions.

This is the front door to the Drew University library, but needless to say, students are encouraged to use the (modern) entrance at the back.

I suspect that this kind of architecture was built to make sure that you knew your place and how small that space really was.
